Have you noticed that some people seem to constantly exude happiness, energy and confidence?
Do you sometimes wonder just how they manage to do that? What their secret recipe might be?
You know that you want what they’ve got, but how can you create your own formula for the Elixir of Life?
There are two key elements to creating this beautiful state to live within, and once you find your personal formula, life will never be the same!
The first element relates to your thinking – how you perceive the world around you. For many people, their thinking is not their own! Yes that sounds crazy I know! However, in our formative years when we begin learning, we learn by role modeling and hence, we all learn everything we know in these early years from those around us. This is usually our parents, caregivers, or close family members, but we might also be influenced by some of our teachers, sporting coaches or pop star idols.
As far as thinking goes, in the first place our thoughts are governed by our reptilian brain. This has been the case for thousands of years and the reptilian brain’s purpose has been to protect us from harm. It is not surprising therefore, to find that the reptilian brain is constantly scanning our personal world for danger or problems – things for us to worry about. Apart from the fact we are wired like this, we are also following the role models of those around us, and the things that are role models find dangerous or scary we will naturally learn or believe to be true for us. The benefit of this is that it keeps us safe, but the downside is that we constantly focus on what to avoid. Further, we might also perceive some things to be dangerous or stressful when they don’t need to be! Look at how much in life we can be missing out on!
The impact of this can be several-fold. Firstly, we can become inhibited in our actions, goals or dreams. This might eventuate in our limiting the potential of our future and constrict our life’s journey if we believe this is how our life should be. Secondly, we can perceive some life events as being stressful when in fact they are just part of life. Perception varies from one person to another and different things cause stress for different people. However, if we are able to think about things differently, undoing the early learning from our reptilian brain that no longer serves us positively, we can create for ourselves a completely different outlook on life.
What are really interesting are the patterns of these thoughts and behaviours: there will be specific patterns within family units and generic patterns that span cultures. These patterns are not surprising given that our early learning is usually done within the family unit. What is too often forgotten is the fact that these patterns of thinking and behaving have been passed down from one generation to another over hundreds of years, showing how enduring the reptilian brain can be, but raising questions about the relevance of some of the patterns in the modern day.
To create the state within which we would like to live our life, we need to change some of our thinking. This does not mean leading a high risk lifestyle, but it requires reflection and awareness of your thoughts and beliefs with a view to determining which of these old patterns need to be changed. There will be some perceived risk merely in the process of change, however, the changes I am talking about are changes that will enhance your life rather than add foolish risk taking.
To assist with changing our thoughts and ultimately our state, we need to activate our energy. It is interesting to note that people who exude positive high energy are usually people who are happy with the world around them, and who have an immensely positive outlook on life.
There are two keys to developing personal high octane energy. The first is movement. This might take the form of regular exercise but it can also include spontaneous dance movement. This doesn’t have to take a particular form but moving your body – your arms and legs is a great way to kick-start your energy. Sound is another important part of creating energy – especially using your voice. Try it for yourself – start moving and bopping along to your favourite tracks, join in and sing and notice how different you feel!
The second key to enhance your state and mood is to focus on what’s good in your life – rather than everything you can muster to worry about. This is gratitude and the importance of gratitude and being grateful for the good things around you is that it teaches your brain to scan for what is positive, fun and exciting as opposed to the reptilian brain that is always on the lookout for danger. If you are stuck for ideas on what’s good, try starting with the simple things that we too often take for granted, such as clean water to drink, or one of my favourites, hot water in the shower!
Of course now all that is left is for you to simply do it!
The best way to achieve this is to decide at what time in your day you will focus on upbeat energy and when you will focus on the calming reflections of gratitude. If you are able, put in a few doses throughout the day to give your elixir and added boost.
When you combine high levels of personal energy by getting that body moving and you focus on the good things in your world, amazing things happen. It becomes far easier to let go of worry and stress and replace it with an inner feeling of peace and calmness which provides a deep level of satisfaction.
This is a truly beautiful state within which to live, and is your very own Elixir of Life.
