Happy New Year. Another new year, another new you? This seems to be the norm with January. It’s that time of the year to un-do all the bad stuff you did to your body during December.
But what if the new you only lasts until February 1st? You know the drill. You find yourself edging toward lollies, donuts and fruit juices.
Maybe you can’t it help. Maybe you’re an addict, like many of us. And nobody blames you considering 80% of supermarket foods contain sugar. But there is HOPE!!
You can overcome sugar addiction without having to give up all sweet foods (like the ones Mother Nature supplies…those ones are good for you).
Kristy Zenk did.
Kristy, marketing professional and author of Lite as a Feather, calls herself a sugar addict and says a little bit of the white stuff leads to bingeing and cravings.
” I know that something physically affects me with refined sugar that renders me completely out of control. It sneaks up on me. I think I can handle it and then I have it more and more often, then my mind chimes in and I start planning when I can have it again and thinking about it all the time. It’s complete madness,” she says.
After years of struggling with her weight and energy levels, Kristy was fed up. She needed to find a new way of life.
“I was at a stage in my life where I was done with all the diets and was in a mode where I was just seeing how food made me feel,” she remembers.
“At the time I was still drinking coffee with three sugars in each and going through the roller coaster of twitchy highs and then plummeting lows at two o’clock in the afternoon. At the same time, I began to understand that any food with sugar in it had an ‘out of control’ element for me. I could easily hoover a whole family block of chocolate in the blink of an eye and with cake, go back for seconds and thirds. I knew this wasn’t normal. I realised other foods didn’t do this to me. And the understanding then that I wasn’t hopeless, and undisciplined with no willpower was an emotional time and very exciting.”
So Kristy gave up refined sugar. For good.
“I have no refined sugar at all. Or honey as that does it to me too. I have stevia, rice malt syrup and occasionally organic maple syrup. I make treats like my own chocolate, slices, gummy lollies at a much lower level of sweetness than your regular sugared up products. I am completely satisfied with one or two and can go about my day and not think about it again or crave it at all.”
What benefits has Kristy had?
“All past issues of binge eating, overeating and weight issues have gone. Physically I am at my goal weight without even having to try to do it or exercise excessively.
“My appetite and ‘off switch’ with foods has normalised and runs as it’s supposed to work. If I’m hungry I eat something, when I’m full I stop. I feel calmer, and have steady energy levels throughout the day. No more afternoon slump.”
I have also been on rollar coaster rides with refined sugar. It has the same effect on me: cravings, bingeing, highs and lows, fogginess, lies, cheating, stealing…okay, maybe not those last things but the rest for sure.
I am, once again, nearly off refined sugar (I still have a beer) and in only a week, notice a big difference. My cravings and constant thinking about food is gone. I have upped my protein and good fats intake and I feel that is key. I eat 2-3 pieces of fruit each day and with the sugars in vegetables and dairy, my life is still pretty sweet.
